17yr Old Bobby Jones Original Type 1 Ed Agnelly c.1919 Photo PSA Authentic #84142079
From a time predating the thirteen major championships and the Augusta National Golf Club, or even Bobby Jones' vision for it, this stunning PSA Type I photo of a now well-known early image of the golf luminary was shot by a local lensman. The year was 1919 and Jones had just finished his World War I relief exhibition tour. The young 17-year-old Bobby Jones from Atlanta, Georgia, still green behind the ears, was captured here by local New Orleans photographer Ed Agnelly at the 1919 Southern Amateur at New Orleans Country Club. Shown with his arms crossed, a dark bowtie, striped cabbie hat and watch hanging from belt details, this crystal clear Type I Bobby Jones photo is encapsulated by PSA for presentation and preservation purposes.
The Southern Amateur was, and still is by some accounts, the premiere amateur tournament. Southern Golf Association hosted the 1919 match-play tournament at New Orleans Country Club on June 24-28th. Jones won Southern Amateur in 1917, 1920, and 1922. The mentioned Nelson Whitney notched five wins of the tournament on his own. Jones' 1919 post-WWI golfing campaign would see his first time representing the United States in a team setting. He was four years away from winning a major championship and had yet to contest in a US Open. That would occur in 1920. Bobby Jones was poised to break through, but the young man would have lessons to be learned prior. 8" x 5"
The verso notations include "Bobby Jones, Atlanta In 1919 (1917 Champion Who Lost Title To Nelson Whitney Of U.O Country Club)" State Sports is also stamped on the busy verso along with 'By Ed Agnelly.' Crystal clear shot with the darkest darks (background trees) and and lightest lights (Bobby's shirt). There is subtle discoloring in the trees, barely noticeable and an imperfect edge that was used to properly frame the star subject who is untouched with these slight alterations.
