1813 Carminum Rariorum Macaronicorum Delectus Edinburgh Book with USGA Bookplate
Marbled inside cover and flyleaf of blue, grey, white and red was once on on the shelf of the world renown United States Golf Association Library. Their off-white bookplate with The Great Seal of the United States is affixed proudly stating publication ownership center cut on the inside cover. Gold leaf print on the spine of this book with early mentions of the game of golf. This was published by members of the Edinburgh Social Club facetiously translating Scottish folk poetry into the Latin language. This book contains a translated poem titled "A Song in Praise of gowfing." The main chorus reads "Thy good example, Phœbus, we'll cheerfully follow/Haud enim semper arcum tendit Apollo/And long will this Assembly mix Seria cum joco,/By meeting at the Golf-Hall, desipere in loco." Published 13 years into the 19th century, Carminum Rariorum Macaronicorum Delectus from Edinburgh
