1824 Leith Thistle Golf Club 'Shield' Score Card - May 1st, 1824 - Historic Original Piece
The 1824 Leith Thistle “Shield” scorecard offered here is one of the oldest original golf scorecards in the golf collecting world. Presenting in exceptional condition for an astounding 193 years old, a prize such as this rarely comes to the market. The notion of a golf course consisting of 18 holes didn't come until years later; this scorecard predates that with it's 10 holes. Usually found only in private transactions, we would like to thank our Consignor for allowing The Golf Auction to present this piece of golf history to you. The opportunity to considerably advance your collection has arrived. The Thistle Golf Club was established in 1815, and was in active operation up to 1830, then had another stint from 1866 to 1888. The original Thistle Golf Club is no more, but it's history thrives through such a well preserved piece. The Scottish Golf History site states "Its most important accomplishment was that in 1824 it published a rule book with an extensive introduction on golf history, which they termed as ‘some historical notices relative to the progress of the game of golf in Scotland'."
Written on the scorecard besides the scoring is 'Gold Medal - May 1, 1824' at the base on 'Mr(?) McKay' at the top
Scorecard measures 3" x 4 1/2", frame is 9" x 10 1/2"
