'Willie Smith of Chicago, Wins the Coveted (US Open) Title' boasts the New York Daily Tribune from 1899 recapping the Baltimore based golf tournament that was won by the Midwesterner. It goes on to say 'Willie Smith, the professional of the Midlothian Country Club, of Chicago, won the open golf championship of the United States for the year 1899-1900 on the links of Baltimore Country Club today, after four rounds of the most brilliant golf ever played in America.'
