1904 PGA Midland Challenge Cup Medal Won by Alex Herd
The Professional Golfers' Association, established in 1901, predated the PGA of America by 12 years and conducted business out of The Belfry golf resort in England. The previous governing entity of the local Midland Professional Golf Club would unite with the Professional Golfers' Association in 1902 to form the Midland section of the PGA. Shortly there after it was announced by the Midland Counties Competition that the golf clubs in that section would be allotted the amount of 2 guineas for 2 professional tournaments for the following year of 1903 - 'Midland Challenge Cup', the stroke-play event named after the recently purchased winner's prize, and 'News of the World Match Play.' The top five finishers in the 36-hole single day 'Midland Cup Challenge' would advance to contest in the 'News of the World Match Play.' These would be the two marquee professional golf tournaments of the region for the early 20th century.
This gold medal recipient Alex 'Sandy' Herd, head professional at Huddersfield Golf Club, had won professional tournaments since 1895 with his career-defining triumph at the 1902 Open Championship. The battle-tested Scot didn't merely win the PGA's 1904 Midland Challenge Cup, he disassembled trailer George Cawsey and the field by 6 strokes. The margin of victory would stand for 30 years and only topped that one time for the 1903-1961 tournament with select years of no play. This medal looks familiar to you perhaps, branded with the early British PGA crest of the day. Front side of the 1 1/4" medal states "Professional Golfers Association" with verso carefully engraved 'Midland Challenge Cup' 'A. Herd' and '1904 (with precious metal stamping below).

During extended bidding, each lot will have its own 30-minute countdown clock. The clock will extend 30-minutes from the time of the most recently placed bid for that lot. If no bids are placed on that lot for a 30-minute period, the lot will close. Place your bids now!

2. During extended bidding, you may bid only on items you PREVIOUSLY placed a bid on.
3. Lots with only ONE or NO BIDS will close at 10pm ET
Extended bidding starts at 10pm ET, and each lot will begin closing with its own 30-minute countdown timer. Lots without a bid placed during extended bidding will close at 10:30pm ET. We recommend you place your maximum bid(s) prior to that time. Thank you
