1910 US Amateur Championship at Brookline Contestant Badge - William C. Fownes Winner

The earliest known U.S. Amateur contestant's badge is the 1910 US Amateur Contestant's Badge from The Country Club at Brookline. William C. Fownes Jr. defeated Warren K. Wood, 4 and 3, but not before defeating Chick Evans in the semi-finals 1-up after being down two with 4 holes to play! William C. Fownes Jr. was the son of Oakmont Country Club founder and designer Henry Fownes. Being one of the five charter clubs that founded the USGA, The Country Club at Brookline originally was founded 128 years ago in 1882, and is listed on the USGA's list of the first 100 clubs in America. Measuring 1 1/4" diameter, stamping along the top rim is 'Amateur Championship' with The Country Club lettering script present in it's center. Just below the script is 'U.S.G.A.' and to complete the base of the medal is 'Brookline Sept 12 17 1910'. Reverse side shows the attaching pin still intact on this astounding piece of golf history. Less then a handful of examples of this sought after badge are known to exist, with this being one of the finest.
