1913 City of Chicago Amateur Championship Runner-Up Medal Awarded to George R. West
Significant to the history of golf in Chicago is this relic, the 1913 City of Chicago Amateur Championship Runner-Up Medal Awarded to George R. West. Held at West's home Jackson Golf Club in Chicago, a relatively unknown amateur golfer in Murray F. Deming bested West 6 & 4 in the 36 hole final of the 1913 City of Chicago Amateur Championship. Both golfers coming off of a sickness "Affected by Strain." Newspaper writer J.G. Davis said this when recounting the tournament the following day "Nurtured daily by the sunshine of success, Murray F. Denning blossomed from a comparatively obscure bud into a full blown city golf champion."
George R. West's Runner-Up medal is simply stunning. Th raised type "Jackson Park Golf Club - Chicago" spans the perimeter of the scalloped edge medal, with the "JPGC" with crossed clubs in the deep blood red enamel center contained by silver notched circle. The reverse contains the following etched text "Amateur City Championship 1913 Championship Flight Runner Up Geo. R. West." It is in excellent condition, as demonstrated by the pictures. 1 3/8" diameter
