1917 American Red Cross Liberty Tournament Medal Won by E.K. Meg - Dwight, Ill. 7-4-1917
The American Red Cross sponsored a handful of golf tournaments during World War I, generating funds for the war effort. The US Open was cancelled in 1917 and 1918, allowing professional golfers to serve the country or travel around to Red Cross exhibition tournaments if they chose to do so. Teenage prodigy Bobby Jones was one of those golfers that played in Red Cross' golf tournaments to raise funds. A revered symbol, the enamel of the red cross commands attention to Joseph E.K. Meg's 1917 medal that was awarded to him in Dwight, Illinois. This was a winner's medal that was awarded. Attached to its original ribbon and pin is this WWI time-period medal dating back to over a century ago. It is in very good condition, with deep red enamel cross only elevating its presentation value. 1 3/8" diameter
