1926 USGA Women's Amateur Championship at Merion Cricket Club Semi-Finalist Medal Won by Courtland Smith
Awarded by the United States Golf Association this bronze medal measures 1 3/4" diameter. Where this medal awarded for play in the fifth U.S.G.A. Championship contested at Merion really excels is its attention to detail in design. The front presents as a raised relief image of the U.S.G.A. logo with identifying wording, "UNITED STATES GOLF ASSOCIATION" and an engraved 1926 the year of competition below the crest. Verso displays engraving "Women's Amateur Championship Sem-Finalist Mrs Courtland Smith" and "Merion Cricket Club September 27th To October 2nd 1926". The intricate detail found on this item now really comes into play with laurel wreaths encircling the wording on the rear of award. Its recipient Mrs. Smith, the former Helen G. Norris, who took up golf in the mid-nineteen-twenties, was twice winner of the Women's New Jersey Golf Association championship. She also won the. Women's Golf Championship of New Jersey twice. In 1928 and 1929, Collier's magazine listed her among the 10 best women golfers in the country. This award remains highly collectible, for it's appearance, and knowledge of the triumph of will it took to achieve over the ever grueling Merion Cricket Club under U.S.G.A. course layout.
