1929 US Amateur Championship at Del Monte G&CC Program - Harrison Johnston Winner
Easily the biggest career win for the Minnesota native, the 1929 champion was Harrison R. Johnston. He defeated Oscar F. Willing 4 & 3 at Del Monte Golf and Country Club. Johnston also played on four winning Walker Cup teams: 1923, 1924, 1928, and 1930. Notable from this tournament is how Bobby Jones was stopped in his tracks while trying to earn three Amateur Championships in a row – a record Jones was widely expected to set. Johnny Goodman did not get rattled by the hype as he went up three up on Jones after the first three holes of the first round. The two battled throughout the day, with Goodman the unlikely one-up leader when they came to the 18. The pair halved the 18th hole with Goodman being one up, therefore knocking the mighty Jones from his peak and out of contention. Includes contributions from Grantland Rice and Jack Neville. A program order form accompanies the program. This piece remains in great condition with stunning artwork on the covers.
