1930 Time Magazine with Bobby Jones on Cover - September
Lets take this collectible and analyze it step by step. Very seldom do athletes ever grace the cover of Time Magazine by themselves. In the year 1930 some of the news makers pictured on the cover were Queen Mary, Al Capone, Herbert Hoover, The Duchess of York and oh yes on the September 22nd, 1930 issue Bobby Jones. It was only the second time a male golfer had made the sought after cover of this weekly in the seven years of printing since 1923 (yes, the first and only other to that time was Jones, himself in 1925). Point number one athletes, and in particular golfers seldom appear. With World War II paper drives much pre 1940's paper is scarce, case in point The Golf Auction has had several copies of the Time cover of Ben Hogan (1949) but has never previously had the Bobby Jones issue. Point number two this is a seldom seen collectible. Point number three, and this one is a big one so we will put in caps - CONDITION, CONDITION, CONDITION! This example of the complete magazine is a blazer with only the slightest of corner wear in the lower left corner (Heck it might be the nicest one out there, examine the photos presented for yourself). We are going to start this one with an inexpensive minimum bid, and see were it goes. One in another auction houses offering in far, far less condition sold for a far greater price. In the end the points all add up to say this is a great Bobby Jones memento from a memorable season, so memorable it made the cover of Time magazine.
