1934 Bobby Jones Tries New Hypodermic Golf Ball During Exhibition at Pinehurst No. 2 7x9 Wire Photo

Only two days following the inaugural Augusta Invitational Tournament, a retired but still young Bobby Jones is captured in historic Pinehurst as he tries out the new hypodermic golf ball during an exhibition. By giving the golf ball a hypodermic injection, the thought was that it would then increase the pressure inside the ball, leading to longer distance. Always fascinating is the increased technology that was going into the sport even 90 years ago. Merely mentioning Bobby Jones had an impact on The Masters would be selling him extremely short. He was The Masters, from building Augusta National Golf Club the way he envisioned doing it to starting the "Invitation Tournament" in 1934. The first playing was only four years of course after his Grand Slam year of 1930 in which he won the US Open, US Amateur, Open Championship and British Amateur. 7" x 9" Caption on reverse: Jones Tries Out New Hypodermic Golf Ball Playing an exhibition match with Horton Smith, Ed Dudley, and Johnny Dawson, Bobby Jones tested the new hypodermic -shot golf ball at pinehurst, N. Car., March 27. The new ball is supposed to add seven to ten yards to each drive. Jones is pictured above driving from the first tee of the number two course.
