From 1916 to 1955 the PGA Championship was conducted through match play. The precursor to the 1945 PGA matches was a 36-hole qualifying round conducted the Monday and Tuesday before the Championship on site at the Moraine CC in Dayton, Ohio where the Championship match was held over the weekend. Defending PGA Champion Bob Hamilton was exempt and 31 players qualified. Byron Nelson and Johnny Revolta were the low qualfiers with 138. Nelson would stay that week as hot as his home state of Texas closing out Sam Byrd 4 and 3 in the Championship match. The win for Lord Byran marked his ninth straight PGA win of 1945 on the way to his record 11 straight that year. Thus the wording on this 1945 PGA contestants pin. The button used as a participants identification tool is inscribed with the lettering "QUALIFIER" "THE PROFESSIONAL GOLFERS PGA ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA" "1945". This example remains in a stong NR-MT condition.
