1947 Greater Greensboro Open-Frank Stranahan Low Amateur Trophy
In this PGA stroke play event mixing professionals and amateurs at Starmount Country club in Greensboro, Frank Stranahan shot a 67 in round two to become the first amateur to lead after any round in the 10-year history of the Greater Greensboro Open. Professional Vic Ghezzi would edge Stranahan, who finished in second place, by two strokes when the final ball dropped on Sunday in the 72 hole event. This run at the overall title did however leave the Toledo, Ohio star player with low amateur honors by five strokes over Pinehurst, N.C. native Dick Chapman. And what a trophy for winning the Low Amateur Stranahan received! Frank's award, which stood 37" tall and measured 14 5/8" x 9", was one of the biggest ever seen and cost the Greater Greensboro tournament committee a staggering, for 1940's standards, one hundred dollars.The size of this trophy caused one of the pro's at the awards ceremony to comment, "A fellow would have to have muscles like Stranahan's to pick that up."
