1947 Masters Tournament Runner-Up Silver Medal Won By Frank Stranahan

In 1947 the 11th Masters was contested headlined by Ben Hogan, Jimmy Demaret and Byron Nelson. The most thrilling player in the event however was Frank Stranahan who went from a relative unknown amateur to a player who would be mentioned as a contender for any major golf title whether the field contained professionals or not for years to come. On the lightning fast Augusta National course that year, Stranahan played the last two rounds in six under par, had the low round 68(sparked by 3 birdies in a 5 hole stretch on the back side) on Sunday, and finished in second overall two strokes behind Demaret. His 73-72-70-68--283 was the lowest score ever for an amateur over the first 11 years of Masters play, bettering the old mark by five strokes. To recognize his runner-up performance in the 1947 Masters the Augusta National awarded Stranahan a sterling silver medal which is offered in this lot. The second place medallion is die struck and measures 1 3/4 inches in diameter. The medallion features the clubhouse and Founders Circle on its facing side with the raised wording Augusta National Golf Club. The reverse of this treasured medallion is engraved with Frank Stranahan's name and 1947 Runner-up beneath the wording Masters Tournament accompanied by the familiar United States map and pinflag tournament logo. This side also contains the stamped wording STERLING for the precious medal that composes this award.

It is difficult to articulate what an extreme opportunity is presented with this auction lot. The rare, seldom seen chance to own an actual medal presented to a contestant on his finest hour of competition in a brilliant career. Combined with the knowledge that this award was bestowed at what has become the pinnacle of championship golf, the Masters. Screams out to any collector of prized golf memorabilia that this treasure is rightfully needed for my collection. A portion of the Frank Stranahan collection proceeds will be donated to The First Tee of Lake Erie.
