1948 North and South Open ChampionshipSterling 2nd Amateur Tray
The North and South is considered the second most significant amateur golf tournament in the United States. It trails only the U.S.G.A.'s National Amateur. Each year it draws a similar top grouping of simon pure players. It is against this field that Frank Stranahan would fire a one under 71 (medalist honors)in qualifying on the Pinehurst No.2 course as he advanced to the match play rounds. Stranahan, who had won the North and South in 1946, is an odds on favorite to reclaim the title. He easily advances to the finals where he faces a local North Carolina college student in 22 year old Harvie Ward (who had defeated a young Arnold Palmer 5 and 4 in the semis). For the finals a crowd of some 3,000 shows up, a large portion of them are college friends of Ward's. They treat the match more like a football game in terms of etiquette booing every swing made by Stranahan. Harvie Ward's putter is magic that day sinking twelve putts of ten feet or more over the mornings first 18 holes. Stranahan over the afternoon 18 draws even with Ward before falling on the 18th hole, one up. It is the start of long rivalry between the two top amateurs in the game. Frank Stranahan's runner up trophy from this significant golf match is offered in this lot.
