1949 British Open 1st Amateur Medal - Frank Stranahan

One of One opportunities are significant in any realm of collecting. Presented here is such an opportunity to own the first ever awarded Silver Medal as First Amateur in the British Open. The Royal and Ancient started the annual tradition, which continues today, of honoring the low scoring amateur competitor, known as the silver medalist, with a 1 3/4' diameter solid silver medal in 1949.

This side also contains markings of silver house along with Sterling content of this spectacular treasure. The Champions award offered here comes from the collection of Frank Stranahan who in 1949 weathered the challenges of the 6,728 yard heavily bunkered ancient Royal St. Georges course hard by the English Channel. He topped all competing American players who had accepted the brutal test of links golf in '49, and his score of 290 (13th overall) was seven strokes off the winning pro Bobby Locke. Stranahan as low amateur scorer joined Locke for the Champions presentation that July day in '49, and became the first player to be recognized as Silver Medalist at the British Open. Only one collection in the world can claim to have this first award. Make this significant first, a cornerstone of your collection.
