1952 World Championship of Amateur Golf at Tam O'Shanter Sterling Trophy - Won by Stranahan
Spectacular golf heirloom which was claimed by Frank Stranahan by virtue of his third successive World Championship of Golf crown at George May's Tam O'Shanter event held outside Chicago, Il.in 1952. As clearly stated on the sterling permanent trophy which was housed at Tam C.C."Win the event three successive years and claim the oversized permanent trophy". That is just what Stranahan did with his third straight at the '52 event, but it was a fight for three rounds aginst his old amateur rival, Hall of Famer Bill Campbell. "Stranny" actual found himself down by two strokes to Campbell after 54-holes. However, with this grandeous trophy in his sights Frank zoomed to a final round 69 while Campbell ballooned to 80. A nine stroke win, marking his third straight year of triumph at the World Championship of Amateur Golf. Engraving on the front of the trophy which Stranahan claimed states:
