1992 US Amateur Championship at Muirfield Contestant Badge/Clip - Tiger's 2nd US Am
Needless to say the USGA took notice. US Junior Amateur champion of 1992, 16-year-old Tiger Woods, defended his title for the first time in the history of the storied contest. Additional Headlines would then be made when he crawled back to qualify for match-play at the Muirfield Golf Club hosted 1992 US Amateur only months later. Adversity greeted young Eldrick at the door in the form of an opening qualifying round of 78. When pressed post-round, Earl Woods matter-of-factly described his son as 'frustrated and angry." The fired up phenom far from rolled over. Cypress, CA teen backed up his lackluster initial qualifying 18 at Jack's place with a Nicklaus-like low round of the day. Tiger Woods' scorching-hot 6-under 66 didn't just qualify, it got him back to even. Aches and pains surfaced overnight for the Western High Junior. While the youngest player in the field did not go on to win the 1992 US Amateur, he would refuse to go a single year without capturing a USGA title until turning professional in 1997. Tiger was still earning his stripes, this tournament being part of that journey.
