1996 Tiger Woods Pro-Debut at GMO Hole-In-One on #14 Calligraphy Plaque
From the hand of the official scorer is this 1996 GMO tournament-displayed hole-in-one black and red calligraphic plaque using the back of a thick cardstock scoreboard display - artistically celebrating the highlight reel final round shot from Tiger's debut. It was produced by necessity, with no one preparing for the shot and making use of resources available to the official scorer. Stylized as the professional knew how, a jet black 3-D box '1' smackdab in the center with a golf hole cut out of it. 'TIGER WOODS' is written in uppercase letters above, contained by a red outline cloud. '#14-202 YDS. - 6-IRON' in thicker matching red marker was formed at the bottom of the plaque box. It was a moment that not only shook the Brown Deer Park Golf Course in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but the golf world. Our March 2023 auction found the value of that final round scorecard, it commanding a new record in the category by a large margin of $125k. His pro-debut was detailed for the frenzied patrons and media members by this large format handwritten and posted single hole scoreboard.
Standing on the 14th tee in his earned Sunday round, Tiger firmly gripped his club and swung with his patented precise fury - finding the bottom of the cup for his first professional hole-in-one! Two skips, a short roll, fist pump and a high five with the yet-to-be famous caddie Fluff next to a brand new Titleist bag. It was a 6-iron from 202 yards. Tiger Woods is special. The roar of the raucous crowd was a (billboard) sign of things to come.
"I Guess Hello World." These four words were said with a youthful smile at the eve presser of his professional debut at the 1996 Greater Milwaukee Open by the then 3-time US Amateur champion. In front of a vintage Miller Lite logo tournament backdrop the first of many iconic professional moments occurred - a great start to the week in which 20-year-old Tiger Woods' second highlight would come during the final round Sunday with a 1 on the scorecard for hole #14. This investment-grade Tiger Woods debut piece was written by the same scorer's hand as the example that came to market in 2022 and finished at a cool $69,000.
