Lot #4 Is a museum worthy golf treasure of extra ordinary proportion. The 18th hole flag that flew at Oak Hill Country Club on August 10, 1980 when Jack captured his 17th Major. This win also saw Nicklaus' set the P.G.A. record for largest margin of victory (7 strokes) since the events switch to stroke play. During the post-championship celebration Nicklaus' caddy Angelo Argea rightfully claimed his prized 18th hole flag. The historical 18th hole marker measures "14 by "19 is made out of nylon fabric which shows moderate use over it's entire body. This use would appear consistent with what affects the outdoor elements would have over a short period of time. The two-tone flag( yellow/navy)has on it's lefthand side the emblem of the Professional Golfers Association of America while the #18 appears boldly on the righthand side ("7 7/8 high numerals).Along the left side of the flag are three grommets which all still retain small strands of fibor which would have attached flag to pin. A tag "1 by "2 is stitched to the reverse of the flag containing the manufacturing information " Pro-Line Standard Golf Co. Cedar Falls, Iowa". A visit to the 100 year old Standard Golf Co. website shows that indeed this was a logo used by the company in it's rich history of service to the golf industry.Along the left side of the flag between two of the grommets is a strip of masking tape applied by Angelo which he has for identification written 'PGA 1980 OAK HILL'. At the top of the flag appearing above the #18 is a black sharpie signature of the champion Jack Nicklaus. A letter from James Spence Authentication accompanies this item verifying the authenticity of the signature. Please note the various pictures adjoining this lot which show the manufactors tagging and also Angelo's identication of the flag. This victory was Nicklaus' fifth and final P.G.A. Championship which tied Walter Hagen for most wins ever in the event.
