One of the top catchers in the history of baseball and a hall of famer, Al Lopez was a Tampa, Florida native born in 1908 and died in 2005. Our consignor Hal Shaw, founder of the Babe Zaharias Foundation, was fortunate to be able to call him a true friend. Al was a member of Babe and George Zaharias’ Tampa Golf and Country Club. During Hal's teenage years, he was employed in the golf shop at the Tampa Golf and Country Club and got to hear about all kinds of golf encounters involving Babe and Al Lopez, especially her performance on the mound pitching to the top players of that era. Babe was endowed by God to be the best female athlete of all time! After her death, Al and some of his well-connected friends got him a membership at the Palma Ciea Golf Club in South Tampa. Mr. Lopez donated his personally owned and played Ping woods, irons and a hard-to-find golf bag with the PCGC fully embroidered logo, also included are Cleveland Indians fuzzy headcovers and on top of that a special putter that was a gift from hall of famer Bob Feller. A signed letter from the founder of the Zaharias Golf Foundation, Hal Shaw, will accompany this lot. 34 1/2" - 42"
