Alex Herd Signed Album Page
Scottish golfer Sandy "Alexander" Herd, who appeared in Open Championships from 1885-1933, leaves his signature on an album page offered here for bidders. Herd's autograph is seldom seen in the golf collector's world, making this ink signature a highly desired item. Herd won the 1902 Open, defeating Harry Vardon and James Braid by one stroke. Open Championships were the only Major tournaments he would appear in, choosing rather to compete in local golf tournaments.
Also present on this album page is a signature from Charles Whitcombe, the middle of three golfing Whitcombe brothers. Although the closest he came to winning a Major was third place in the Open Championship in 1935, Charles garnered many professional wins, Including the Irish Open and the British PGA Matchplay. Charles was also a Ryder Cup team member from 1927-1937, and a non-playing captain in 1949.
The signature of Rufus Stewart is also present here. Stewart won the 1927 Australian Open and was the first head professional at the Kooyonga Golf Club in South Australia.
James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed the signature and their auction letter of authenticity will come with this lot.
Please note: This auction will end at 7:00pm EST on Sunday, April 9th with EXTENDED BIDDING to follow. All items in the auction will remain open until no items have received a bid within a 15 minute time period. All lots are free to be bid on until extended bidding has ended
