Arnold & Winnie Palmer Signed 1964 Masters 'Arnold Palmer's Scrapbook to Jack Sargent

Simply put, Arnold Palmer was to the Masters as The Masters was to Arnold Palmer. Few names are held in higher regard on the hollowed Augusta National Grounds and reminiscing of the days of old is only fitting considering the club and their tournament's place in golf history. This offering is for an informative, well put together depiction of Arnold Palmer's four Masters Tournament wins in 1958, 1960, 1962, and 1964. From a limited production run, this example rises head and shoulders above the rest with signatures made out to Jack Sargent from both Arnold Palmer and his wife Winnie. Because of this book's size and limited production, finding a signed example is difficult. Palmer inscribed "To Jack - A fine friend and golf pro - Arnold Palmer" on the title page just above his black and white picture. Winnie added "...with very best wishes for everything from the non-golfing Palmer. - Winnie" below. This oversize, leather cover book includes numerous pictures and media coverage of Arnold Palmer, Augusta National and the trophy he captured in 1964 as well as his three previous victories at Augusta National Golf Club. This piece is necessary to complete a Masters or Golf library or to be educated on The King's impactful victories at The Masters. Excellent condition, with slight staining present on cover. 14 1/2" x 17 1/2." James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authentication comes with this lot.

The Sargent Family Collection

With the long, storied history of the game of golf and the Professional Golfer's Association firsts in th year of 1958 were not very common. George and Harold Sargent would become the first father-son to hold the gavel as President of the PGA of America. It wasn't the first time Harold followed in his father's footsteps. Atlanta native and member of golf royalty Bobby Jones handpicked George Sargent as the Head Golf Professional in 1932 at the Atlanta Athletic Club, making the appointing a family affair 15 years later with Jones' pick of son Harold for head pro at East Lake Golf Club.

Englishman George Sargent was introduced to a gentleman by the name of Harry Vardon at the nearby Ganton Golf Club in 1899, five years after taking up the sport at age twelve. After success playing professional golf beginning in 1901, he soon moved to Canada and met his wife Margaret whom of which he had 11 children with. The year 1909 Sargent would however cement his name in golf's history books, winning the 1909 US Open while setting a new tournament scoring record with his 290 strokes over the 72 holes. Three years later he continued his head club professional career at the illustrious clubs of Scioto in Ohio, followed by Interlachen, Chevy Chase and of course East Lake Country Club. Harold stayed in the family business of golf his whole career, with the honor of the longest serving member of the rules committee for The Masters Tournament. Relics from The Sargent Family Collection are proudly presented in this auction, many from the close ties of prominent golfers and friends including Bobby Jones.
