Ben Hogan 1948 US Open Photo with Original Negative
The '48 United States Open was contested at Riviera, and Hogan came through in dramatic fashion shooting an Open record (by 5 shots) score of 276 over the four rounds of his win. It would be his third major championship title. Born within six months of two other acknowledged golf greats of the twentieth century, Sam Snead and Byron Nelson, Hogan is notable for his profound influence on the golf swing theory and his legendary ball-striking ability, for which he remains renowned among players and fans. Included in this lot is the original negative for this photo, as well as a developed post-swing shot of the tournament champion.
Esteemed golf instructor Alex Morrison was behind many impressive game's, likely none more than that of Henry Picard's. The lineage to the Golden Bear is simple and complex, as Picard then taught Jack Grout, who taught Jack Nicklaus. Morrison was behind all of it, and much more as his teachings were in numerous books and newspapers for the masses. His reach in the golf industry went further, as Morrison became an acclaimed photographer and writer, each of which could have been his sole profession. Here is an original Morrison photo, with the influential figure the eye behind the camera that took it. 8" x 10"
