Ben Hogan 1955 US Open Playoff Original Unseen 11x14 Photos - Weary & Courageous in "Hogan's Defeat"

Presented here is a rare original photographic chronicle of Ben Hogan’s collapse during his playoff defeat by hands of Jack Fleck (with Ben's clubs) in the 1955 U. S. Open at the Olympic in San Francisco on June 19, 1955. Tied after 72 at +7, Fleck outplayed Hogan 69 to 72 in the playoff. In what many thoughts was going to be a lopsided playoff victory for Hogan, most surprisingly Fleck was in command after a birdie at 10 put him three strokes up. Though challenged on the back side with his lead as little as one stroke entering 18, Fleck stood tall and finished with a par on 18 to defeat Hogan by three strokes (69-72). Only four other players, all only once, had broke 70 at Olympic Club that week. Fleck with his playoff round 69 broke 70 three times. One of the greatest upsets in sports history was complete. During the playoff, there were moments where the momentum had changed, and these strokes are captured and presented in these extraordinary photos. Taken by renown San Francisco Examiner sports photographer, Charles Doherty, these seven large format original images are in presented portfolio form for submission to the University of Missouri School of Journalism’s 13th Annual Photo Competition and Exhibition in 1956 by Doherty, himself. Among these images is the famous photo of Hogan using his iconic cap to cool off Fleck’s hot putter during the presentation ceremony. Also of note is photos of Bantam Ben bent over seemingly in pain, a lasting feeling which resulted from his well documented horrific car crash years earlier. Photo size are 11” X 13 7/8” except the cover photo which measures 8 1/2” x 10”. Each photograph is accompanied by a description. (Please note that one of the descriptions has become loose from the page). Those attached to the photos themselves are attached only by newspaper page mock up paste and do not damage the photos themselves. Not just rare, but a truly unique, one-of-a-kind opportunity to own a piece of golfing lore captured as it happened. This original picture series. Binder measures 14 1/2" x 11 1/8"
