Ben Hogan's Personal Custom Irish Cotton White Tam O'Shanter Hat w/Letter
Personal items from Ben Hogan's wardrobe simply don't surface often, so when 'The Hawk's' iconic white Tam O' Shanter hat in this lot walked in the door - with Colonial Country Club lineage - it was a best-case scenario. With it's Imported Irish Cotton cloth tag and 'Flip It' written in the center of the lining, this hat is accompanied by a letter of provenance from the consignor. In it, Christian Elliston chronicles its derivation from Ben Hogan's niece Jacque Hogan Towery to his father who became good friends with her while working The Colonial Invitational tournament. Jacqueline ("Jacque") Hogan Towery is the last living Hogan. Her father, Royal Dean Hogan was Ben Hogan's older brother. Ben Hogan's hat in this lot was used, but not abused, and exhibits slight overall wear as detailed in the accompanying lot photos. The snap front carries a brown leather band around the inner circumference.
When examining photos of Ben Hogan in his 20's during his first individual professional win at the 1940 North and South Championship or Hogan in his 80's as an elderly business man in the 1990's and you will find very few constants over the ages - with the exception of his signature white ivy cap. It was there on his head in competition over almost all of his professional wins (one exception was a switch to a tartan pattern for his '53 British Open triumph), and it was there in later life as he traveled in suit to his business office post career. The playing days photo of Ben, in cap, is also well captured on the cover of James Dodson's definitive biography "Ben Hogan An American Life", and an image of Hogan later life in sports coat and traditional flat cap appears in tribute to the man on his approved artwork and corresponding lithograph print series. Size is 7.
Please note that this lot includes a facsimile Ben Hogan post swing photo, it is strictly for presentation, and the signature is a facsimile. This includes a letter of provenance from the consignor, who's father knew Ben's daughter Jacque Hogan from Colonial Country Club.

2. During extended bidding, you may bid only on items you PREVIOUSLY placed a bid on.
3. Lots with only ONE or NO BIDS will close at 10pm ET
