This lot's consignor met with the late Mr. Casper's wife Shirley in 2017. Billy Casper hadn’t requested his full size Ryder Cup for being a Captain in 1979, and therefore his family was still eligible to have it commissioned. The Casper family then requested that the full size version be produced (these are only available to the USA captains and not the European captains) and the production company contacted PGA of America for formal permission which was successfully granted. Our consignor agreed to purchase this official rendering. The trophy comes directly from the Casper family, which was ordered directly through the PGA of America via the PGA of America's official trophy maker and is hallmarked accordingly. Only one trophy per Ryder Cup Captain is allowed, a protocol that is strictly supervised and overseen by the PGA of America. The example currently up for auction is the only one commissioned Captain’s Trophy from the 1979 Ryder Cup matches. This trophy is to the exact specifications, with the results of the matches taken up to 1979 again engraved as the original was in 1979. This historical item is a rarity. In summary, this is for all intents and purposes the original - as Mr. Casper never took delivery of his full size Captains example in 1979 and it was provided retrospectively as noted above.

The six word descriptor 'Full Size Ryder Cup Captain Trophy' unquestionably has a nice ring to it. And who better for it to come from than Billy Casper, as he proudly represented the United States in eight straight Ryder Cups as a player and not missing a single one of the celebrated international biennial matches from 1961 to 1975 - certainly deserving of the highest Ryder Cup honor, atop the United States Team helm! Casper's chance to take Team USA under his tutelage came in 1979. He did as a captain as he did as a player - go out and win.

This stunning and endlessly intricate Captain's Trophy carries the engraving of a master craftsman on the bottom gold plated band 'Billy Casper - Captain 1979 - The Greenbrier.' Circling this meaningful and well earned title, after notching a US record of 23 1/2 points, are the results of 1973-1979 with the common victor. The man they affectionately called Buffalo Bill's 1963-1971 streak of Ryder Cup team wins is detailed in the same fashion on the bowl of the trophy above - a good problem to have. Fantastically, this trophy exudes class from every angle. Detailing was done with a keen eye, adding both depth and personality to this crown jewel of team competition. Elegant lines follow this trophy in Ryder Cup fashion, the ultimate hourglass figure. While player Ryder Cups are understandably rare and one of the last items to leave the trophy case, if it does, this is the very first Captain Ryder Cup - from the winningest United States contributor since Samuel Ryder's inception of it in 1927. Speaking of which, to complete this piece Mr. Ryder's name is also found on this trophy. Coming full circle, the bowl reads in the hand performed etching "Presented by Samuel Ryder Esq. JP of St Albans to the Professional Golfers Association of Great Britain May 1927. This full size PGA of America trophy was produced by JB Jewelry & Antiques in 2018, the PGA’s dedicated trophy maker. This item measures 17" Tall With The Top On, 13 1/2" Without The Top, The Base Measures 6" In Diameter And Weighs 4lbs 11ozs.
