Bobby Jones Signed Dom Lupo Grand Slam British Amateur at St. Andrews Print - Only One Known
Golf's undisputed king Bobby Jones incredibly signed this stunning close in-color depiction of himself en route to capturing what no one in the sport had before, The Grand Slam! Artist Dom Lupo brushed Jones playing out of the rough at the 1930 Amateur Championship at the 'Home of Golf' approximately a mere six years prior to his passing. This Dom Lupo 'Grand Slam' print was signed by Jones in blue ballpoint in the light colored sky, with the full-name representing one of the finest examples uncovered from the then ailing Jones and resulting in a one-of-a-kind gem oversized 'Grand Slam' piece. Revered 'Golf Magazine' artist and illustrator Dom Lupo produced this work for the 1965 August publication's 'Grand Slam Commemorative Issue.' Lupo's tenure at 'Golf Magazine' spanned 25 years, chosen as the artist for a number of other high profile works in the sporting industry including to hang on the walls of the World Golf Hall of Fame. This colorful artist rendition of Bobby Jones in the deep rough of St Andrews Old Course. Jones's stoic facial expression of intense concentration portrays the visionary playing his next shot in his head prior to swinging the club and eluding a big number on the scorecard. New York Sun sportswriter said it best when he famously phrased Jones' four Major triumphs in 1930 as Jones "stormed the impregnable quadrilateral of golf." This event captivated the minds of most 1930's Americans whether they were golf fans or not, offering the opportunity to see one of the grandest moments in the Golden Age of Sport, Bobby Jones' accomplishment as the only player to win the pre-Masters era Grand Slam. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity #XX34077 comes with this lot. 22 1/2" x 20 1/2.
