Champion Bobby Jones 1929 US Open at Winged Foot GC Trophy Ceremony Press Photo
Not of myth, but of legend, was Bobby Jones' 23-stroke defeat of Al Espinosa during the 36-hole playoff at the 1929 US Open. With defeat inevitable, Espinosa looks to have taken it well with his facial expression in this crystal clear photo in which Bobby Jones is awarded the winner's trophy. Deemed perhaps an "action photo" as USGA President Findlay Douglas is captured in the motion of handing the trophy to Jones, each with a hand on a handle, this is perhaps the finest piece of photography the championship yielded. The verso contains its original coinciding caption for this still that was shot by a professional lensman covering the historic event.
The special week was inevitable at the Winged Foot Golf Club in 1929. Bobby Jones opened US Open play with a first round 69, his sensational 31 on the back nine outstanding in all regards. At the end of four rounds of play Jones remained tied with Al Espinosa. The 36-hole playoff the next day saw Jones put a staggering 23 stroke exclamation point win in posting his third US Open Championship. Bobby Jones' performance was outstanding during the '29 Championship, remaining one of his signature moments. Legendary Course Designer A.W. Tillinghast crafted the exacting course that is Winged Foot which saw its first round played in 1923. 2. During extended bidding, you may bid only on items you PREVIOUSLY placed a bid on.
3. Lots with only ONE or NO BIDS will close at 10pm ET
Extended bidding starts at 10pm ET, and each lot will begin closing with its own 30-minute countdown timer. Lots without a bid placed during extended bidding will close at 10:30pm ET. We recommend you place your maximum bid(s) prior to that time. Thank you
