Champion Gay Brewer's 1967 Masters Tournament Used Winning Putter

Presented here is an historic find of epic proportions - Gay Brewer’s personally used tournament winning 1967 Masters Putter! The distinct black and white dot Fred Haas manufactured mallet putter also carried Gay Brewer to the runner-up silver medal finish to Jack at the 1966 Masters, and won him the 1972 Canadian Open. Gay also used his trusty putter in this lot during the 1967 and 1973 Ryder Cup US victories and finally, Brewer captured the Alcan Open in both 1967 and 1968 at the Old Course in St. Andrews and Royal Birkdale respectively. 34 3/4"

This spectacularly newsworthy putter originates from Gay’s trusted friend, PGA tour clubmaker and former Caddy, Bob Boring. Gay Brewer sought Mr. Boring assistance in 1998 when Gay was relocating to a new residence. It was on this occasion when Gay Brewer presented this putter putter of great significance to Bob.

Gay Brewer was a well-known tinkerer of his golf clubs, sure to get his bag contents just right. Like most professionals in the 1960’s Gay enjoyed working on his own clubs, ensuring they meet the high standards of his discerning eye. The process was consistent, with important steps. Brewer would disassemble, grind and then bend them. For the finishing touches the 1967 Masters champion would file and add weight to them. During the 1998 relocation visit Bob asked Gay if he could see his 1967 Masters putter. Mr. Brewer reluctantly told Bob that he broke the putter in half while attempting to bend the shaft decades earlier. There, beneath an old basement workbench was that very putter broken in two! Gay grabbed the putter from its improbable location and asked Bob to restore and repair the club to its original standards. The face of the putter still has a vice mark impression when Gay performed his ill fated repair. In keeping with Gay’s request Bob refinished and redrilled the head and used components from Brewer’s basement to reshaft and regrip the club. The neck/hosel of the putter is now a little shorter due to the reshafting process.

Bob has been in possession of this putter for approximately 25 years and has determined its time to share this museum quality piece with the golfing world. A Certificate of Authenticity signed by Bob Boring will accompany this lot.
