Charlie Sifford Signed 1967 GHO Tournament Winning Used Golf Glove with Info - Historic Win
"I would not have got into golf had it not been for (Charlie) Sifford," Tiger Woods proclaimed while paying homage to his good friend and golfing inspiration. He was the "Jackie Robinson of golf," PGA Tour peer Lee Trevino said in a powerful cross-sports reference of Sifford. Without question Charlie Sifford's impact on the sport will be felt for many generations.
Charlie Sifford's personal glove in this lot represents much more than a tournament worn and signed piece from the World Golf Hall of Famer, while that would be noteworthy in itself. This glove's original owner, Charlie Sifford, wore it in the 4th and final round to become the first African American to win an Official PGA Tour event at the 1967 Greater Hartford Open! Sifford's stroke count totaled 272 over the four rounds, with the final being a tidy 64. The palm is worn and there is slight discoloration that runs up the thumb and pointer finger of this Cadet "JB" glove, and rightfully so. Charlie signed the glove in blue ballpoint pen and presented it to tournament Co-Chairman James C. Dillon, as Dillon presented Sifford with the hardware. The week broke the color barrier on the PGA Tour, advancing his trailblazing feat of PGA Tour membership in 1961. The 1967 edition of the tournament would be the first playing under that GHO name, with Dillon taking great pride in promoting the well received $100,000 tournament and the names in the field reflected that effort - Gary Player, Ray Floyd, Lee Trevino, and Al Geiberger among the participants. While the GHO at Wethersfield Country Club was positioned for great success, few knew how significant it would end up being. The first African-American to play on the PGA Tour, Charlie Sifford, would make claim to his first official PGA Tour tournament victory. Accompanying the glove in this lot is a signed pairing sheet from the 1967 GHO by champion Charlie Sifford, along with 14 additional contestants including the aforementioned Lee Trevino, as well as a official scorecard, tournament invitation, parking passes, pin, divot tool and advertising material. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity comes with this lot.
