Chick Evans Signed 1947 Handwritten Letter to Ed Dudley on Beloit Dairy Co. Letterhead 10/21

Handwritten and signed by Chick Evans on October 21, 1947 to the first and acting Augusta National Golf Club head professional and PGA President Ed Dudley in response to his invitation to the Ryder Cup that year as an official referee. While Evans declined the position, as he was not able to travel to Portland Golf Club in Oregon, he was honored by the request. "It is like your friendship...to suggest my name out of all the Walker Cup Players." Using the entirety of the single page on the local Chicago Beloit Dairy Co. letterhead, Evans accepted his invitation to the British Team welcoming event and mentioned his PGA golf participation during that 1947 season - wrapping up a letter with intriguing content from the revered golf penman. This was long part of the PGA of America archives, dusting it off in this lot for its very first offering.

Charles "Chick" Evans was without question one of the best amateur golfers of his generation. in a time that included Bobby Jones and Francis Ouimet. He was also a superior iron-player to any of the professionals during his time. His many accomplishments include being the first amateur to win the Western Open in 1910 and the first amateur to win the U.S. Open as well as the U.S. Amateur in the same year. Possibly aiding in his accomplishments, Evans had some personal philosophies that he would abide by. One being "I made a rule never to swing a golf club except to hit a golf ball, for I had learned that one could swing beautifully when the ball wasn’t there, and poorly when it was." This lot will come with a signed Letter of Provenance from Historian Bob Denney of the PGA of America, proclaiming that this item comes from their collection. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity comes with this lot.
