Circa 1895 John Dunn BGI One Piece with BGI Shaft Stamp
A John D. Dunn BGI one-piece driver with hickory head and shaft made from the one piece of wood is offered in this lot. This club dates circa 1895 and includes a leather face. Unique to this club is the shaft and head are made from a singular piece of wood. BGI was one of the first three golf club makers in America starting in the mid 1890's & ending mysteriously in less than 10 years. They were known as a creative company and had an eye for producing quality golf clubs. 'BGI Co.' is found in dark stamping on the shaft of the club with arrows on either side. 'BGI Co. Trade Mark' is stamped on the crown, along with a lion emblem. Progressive and ahead of their time, this high quality workmanship is prevalent in this club. Their elegant design is apparent in their scareneck woods. There are signs of usage on the club in markings and chipping, resulting in a condition that would be still considered good to very good for its age. The condition report is illustrated in the pictures as well. It measures 44" from the top of the grip to the bottom of the heel.
