Don Cherry's 1962 US Open Sectional Qualifying Round Low Amateur Sterling Medal Detroit - Nicklaus Win
Successful amateur and Walker Cup team member Don Cherry qualified for the 1962 US Open by posting the low score for the Detroit sectional qualifying tournament round. The 1962 Us Open was one of the most influential US Open's ever, with Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer battling it out in a playoff and Jack coming out with his first major and PGA Tour win. We all know the well told story of Jack's first career win in Arnold Palmer's own backyard. For his success in the Detroit sectional stage of the US Open Don Cherry received the medal which is offered in this lot. It is engraved on the reverse as follows:

This memento from Cherry's 1962 US Open sectional qualifying round measures 1 3/8" diameter. Sterling and The Robbins Co. hallmarks are found on the reverse.
