Francis Ouimet's Personal Set of Spalding Executive Irons with Letter

Warranting inclusion in the most advanced golf collections, often retained by a curator with a discerning eye for personal equipment, this acquisition opportunity will be a necessary one to follow through on. Spalding Co. forged this complete set of nine irons for the "Father of Amateur Golf" and improbable 1913 US Open champion Francis Ouimet, with Ouimet's facsimile signature deeply engraved into each head. Circa 1955-1965 while innovation in golf equipment at Spalding and throughout the industry was stressed for the continuously growing game, the company altered Francis' custom set from the rest in production to keep club names of yesteryear that he was comfortable with and preferred such as "Spade" and "Mashie." Ouimet would pass away in 1967 at 74 years old, leaving one of the greatest golfing legacies and "upsets" in the world of sport. He was using this set towards the very end of his casual playing career and are indeed believed to be his last. As far as club specifics go, the irons are Spalding Executive model clubs with medium shafts. The ferrules appear to be original and the serial numbers (783738) match. Francis Outimet’s signature can be found below “Executive” on the head back for each of the 9 irons. Red, black and gold "Pro Only" shaft bands wrap around each club. The complete list of unique “old-time golf” club names in Ouimet's set here: Sammy,Sr. Mashie, Midiron, Jr. Mashie, Spade Mashie, Jr. Spade, Pitching Wedge & Niblic. As detailed best in the third listing photograph, welcomed consistent wear on the face of the clubs from ball striking can be seen. Clubs ranging from 34 1/2" x 39".

Creating one of the most storied victories in golf history, Ouimet was victorious at his home course of The Country Club as Brookline. Famously employing his 10-year old caddy Eddie Lowery, the image of the pair walking with the bag that day is looked back on when remembering that day. Said image can be found opposite the title page. While The Golf Auction has offered singles and sets of "gamers" from the bags of Arnie, Horton Smith, and Ben Hogan, these represent the preeminent offering of Francis Ouimet's personal golf clubs. Included in this lot is a signed letter of provenance from Kevin McGrath formerly of golf auction house Sporting Antiquities.
