Francis Qiumet Signed 1942 Hale America Low Qualifier Award

With the onset of World War II, the United States Golf Association called a halt to the U.S. Open opting to stage more local competitions. The U.S.G.A. agreed to schedule a substitute event with the Chicago District Golf Association and the PGA of America. This event would be known as the 1942 Hale America Open. Just as it was and has been since in 'peace-time" U. S. Opens there is both local qualifying and sectional qualifying. Frank Stranahan, as a 19 year old,won the local qualifying event staged in May of 1942 in Coral Gables, Florida at the legendary Miami-Biltmore Golf Course. After winning this event Stranahan advanced to sectional qualifying in Atlanta. He advanced out of this stage as well, and participated in the 1942 Hale America which was held at the Ridgemoor Country Club in Chicago. At this famous tournament which was the U.S. Open in every respect other then name (called a tournament instead of the U.S.G.A's preferred wording Championship in regards to the peace-time U.S. Opens), Ben Hogan was champion over almost all of the top players of the day. Meanwhile the 19 year old, Stranahan fared well finishing as third low amateur. Offered in this lot is the 9 x 11 3/4 certificate which Frank Stranahan won in 1942 as the low scorer in local qualifying for the 1942 Hale America Open. It has been hand signed by Ned Everhart and Francis Ouimet. All though not as famous as U.S. Open champ Ouimet, Everhart played professional football and basketball before serving as the course pro at the Miami-Biltmore for 21 years. A portion of the Frank Stranahan collection proceeds will be donated to The First Tee of Lake Erie.

James Spence Authentication(JSA) has reviewed this Ouimet signature, and their letter of authenticity comes with this lot.
