Frank Stranahan's 1950 Masters Bronze Contestant's Gift/Souvenir Medallion
Exuding class the Augusta National Golf Club and it's yearly invitational golf tournament known worldwide as the Masters runs their event first class. A perfect example of this from a day far gone by, was the 1950 Masters Tournament souvenir presented to each of their almost 100 contestants that year. The gifted bronze medallion measures 3" diameter and 1/4" tall. Where this momento of play at the Masters really excels is its attention to detail in design. The front presents as a raised relief image of the Augusta National with wording above the club, "MASTERS TOURNAMENT" and an engraving of the players name and year of competition in this case "FRANK STRANAHAN" and "1950". Verso displays the familiar Masters logo encompassing the continental United States with a pin flag tucked in the state of Georgia. The intricate detail found on this item now really comes into play with laurel wreaths encircling the logo, and finally the outer edge of the verso of the medallion has been encircled with 18 numbered pin flags representing each of the holes at the National. One of the most collectable, for it's appearance, in the line of contestant's gifts that continues for players in the Masters until this day. The recipient of this gift Frank Stranahan finished 14th in the 1950 Masters and was low amateur. Stranahan would appear at Jimmy Demaret's jacket presentation that year. He, as low amateur, was outfitted in a green jacket for the ceremony but it was only as a loaner for that brief moment in time.
A portion of the Frank Stranahan collection proceeds will be donated to The First Tee of Lake Erie.
