Frank Stranahan's 1947 Reading Open Low Amateur Sterling Silver Bowl
As the Fall's October leafs fell over the Berkshire Country Club in Reading, Pa during play in the PGA's last full field event of the 1947 season. It was apparent that Frank Stranahan's game in 1947,like the leafs that lay scattered over the Pennsylvania course, had made a drastic change that year. Stranahan's game had bloomed with a second place finish in the spring of '47 at the Masters, and gained additional strength and maturity in the summer of '47 with another second place finish at the British Open. That is where the comparison comes to an end as the leafs fell into decay, but young Frank's golf game continued to grow. That growth was once again clearly seen at Reading where the Toledo native gave the pro's a battle finishing third overall with a score of 282 for the four round event. Dutch Harrison at 277 and Bobby Locke at 280, seasoned professionals were the only linksmen to better Stranahan. His performance earned him a silver bowl which carries the following engraving:
