Hal Sutton's 1999 Ryder Cup at The Country Club Trophy Keepsake Box
The 1999 Ryder Cup carries significant weight in the collecting industry, with this lot representing a stunning hand-painted trophy box gifted to leading United States points getter Hal Sutton (3 1/2). Hand painted (peint main). Limoges France is stated on the bottom of this jewel. Opening the hinged top reveals "The Country Club" and "Ryder Cup 1999" painted inside. This ornate piece with high presentation value commemorates the events that took place that memorable week at The Country Club.
Ryder Cup lore will tell the story for as long as the tournament is played. The 1999 Ryder Cup at The Country Club at Brookline is known as the "The Battle of Brookline" and the most celebrated and unlikely United States Ryder Cup victory in recent memory. The Europeans lead 10-6 prior to the final round, needing merely 4 points on that Sunday to retain the Cup. Justin Leonard drained a 45 foot putt to win the Ryder Cup for the Americans, overcoming the seemingly insurmountable deficit that the Europeans had worked so hard to achieve. 1 5/8" x 1 1/4" x 2 3/4." A signed letter of provenance from Hal Sutton will accompany this lot.
