Hal Sutton's Sterling Silver Calamity Jane Trophy for 1998 TOUR Championship Win - Wow!

Have you ever seen a Sterling Silver Calamity Jane putter?! If you have it was likely in the hands of Tour Champions Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson or Rory McIlroy at Bobby Jones' home course East Lake Golf Club, with the prized possession still in their collection and proudly on display. Directly from champion Hal Sutton comes the ONLY example of this extraordinary trophy offered to the public, with astounding attention to detail and exact replication of Jones' winning putter. The culmination of the 1998 PGA Tour schedule would be contested by only the top 30 deserving players at a familiar host site in Atlanta, Georgia's East Lake Golf Club. Former PGA Champion Hal Sutton played victor at the Texas Open slightly more than a month prior on September 27th, with a narrow one stroke win. While he won by the slimmest of margins there, the season's finale at East Lake in the 1998 Tour Championship featuring a duel with Fuji's Vijay Singh would take more than 72 holes to decide a winner. A Sudden Death finish would decide it! Hall Sutton's 4-wood approach at the nerving 240 yard par 3 18th hole and finishing it off with a confident putt with the ball settling at the bottom of the cup. Local golf luminary Bobby Jones' impact on the East Lake Club in which he grew up playing on is unmeasurable, with artifacts from his career still proudly displayed at the club. It would be no different, with Hal Sutton's trophy itself paying homage to Jones' storied career with his famous putter composed of sterling silver. The precious metal sterling silver putter is crafted with no expenses spared and detailed down to the whipping, in the same placement of Bobby Jones' famous championship flat iron.

This awarded trophy is presented in this lot with its original green box with a gold-tone nameplate found in the center. The plate states: The Calamity Jane Putter - This commemorative putter is an exact copy of Bobby Jones' original putter. It has a 66 degree lie and 8 degree loft. Jones received the original in 1920 from James Maiden. That putter and a copy were employed by Jones to capture 13 Major Championships and the Grand Slam in 1930. This is sourced directly from Hal Sutton's personal collection and represented not only this victory, but the deciding factor in his 1998 PGA Tour Comeback Player of the Year campaign. A signed letter of provenance from Hal Sutton will accompany this lot.

The Hal Sutton Collection
Hal Sutton's golf game flourished while growing up in his hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana. In fact the highly touted amateur golfer chose to stay closeby after high school and went to local Centenary College. It wouldn't take much time for the All American to put his school and town on the national golfing map when he received 'Golf Magazine's 1980 College Player of the Year' after 14 victories and lifting the small liberal arts school to 9th in the Nation. Unsurprisingly Hal Sutton would find great success at the professional level, notching 14 PGA Tour victories between 1982 and 2001. The 1983 season was a one for Sutton, earning PGA Tour Player of the Year honors as the leading money winner and the new accolade of 'major champion.' Sports Illustrated's golf writer Dan Jenkins' emphatically recapped his 1983 PGA Championship triumph with "There's a New Bear on the Loose - Hal Sutton Put a Death Grip on the PGA Championship To Stop a Classic Jack Nicklaus Charge." This came only months after his The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass win. Representing his country became a common role Sutton found himself in, as a 4-time Ryder Cup player in 1985, 1987, 1999, and 2002, before being chosen as the Ryder Cup Captain in 2004. He was a victorious Walker Cup team member in 1979 and 1981.

After playing two decades on the tour Hal began to shift his attention to philanthropy, with that soon becoming a main focus. This didn't go unnoticed in the golfing community and Sutton was the 2007 Payne Stewart Award recipient. He would raise more than $2 million with fellow Louisiana natives David Toms and Kelly Gibson for Hurricane Katrina and Rita victims. The Golf Auction has been very appreciative of the opportunity to offer some of Hal's Collection, including his 1998 TOUR Championship Calamity Jane Trophy, Gold Plated Scotty Cameron Putter for 2000 Players Win and all four of his 2000 Players Championship winning scorecards when it was "The Right Club."
