Horton Smith Signed 4/13/33 Ryder Cup Program Content Letter

After Horton Smith and Captain Walter Hagen wrote some content for the 1933 Ryde Cup program they asked for PGA's A.R. Gates edit the copy prior to publication. "I think it will suit them as I sort of know their views," Smith wrote in this letter from his Oak Park, Illinois location in regards to the British Ryder Cup team and dignitaries. The first Masters champion, just less than a year later, signed this in his flowing blue signature simply as 'Horton.' PGA's George Jacobus is also mentioned as receiving the statements.

The 1933 Ryder Cup would be a close contest. Brit Easterbook and United States' Shute were all square on the final green facing par putts of approximately 30 feet each. It would be Easterbrook to putt first - leaving his approach putt within tap-in range. Shute hit his first putt four feet past the hole and missed the comeback putt. With this the trophy went back to Britain and the series was tied 2-2! This letter was signed by Horton Smith just less than a year prior to his victory in the inaugural Masters Tournament.
