Jack Nicklaus' 1960's Match Used MacGregor Tommy Armour SS1 Irons - Given to Angelo (Letter)

One of only two known Jack Nicklaus personal used iron sets from his earliest major winning years is showcased in this offering! These historic MacGregor Tommy Armour SS1 irons have impeccable provenance given by Jack to longtime caddy Angelo Argea and are accompanied by Angelo's handwritten letter. The other set? Well, it is firmly held in place both literally and figuratively at the Jack Nicklaus Museum at his alma mater The Ohio State University - proudly exhibited behind glass for visitors' observation. That display's nameplate dates the clubs from the 1961-1966 period, with this the only other known MacGregor iron's from Nicklaus bag during the infancy of his professional career that started off with four professional majors before 1966. Jack Nicklaus took these seven weapons into battle after battle, paralleling significant preverbal 'weapons' across the world of sport. Those of six and seven figure prized bats from Baseball Hall of Famers such as Babe Ruth, who fought off balls in a battle with the pitcher at the plate.

From The Golden Bear's bag, from The Golden Bear's caddy - and in turn preservation of the air-tight provenance story - Angelo Argea handwrote the following on his personal 'Yardage by Angelo' letterhead concluded with his signature:

"Dear Billy, 'The Professor', my favorite nephew. I am giving you these clubs Jack gave me in 1975 when I moved to Palm Beach Gardens. He used them when I first got on his bag in the 60's. Pass them on to your kids, and to their kids, ets. Keep them in the family! Best of Luck, Angelo."

MacGregor Tommy Jack Nicklaus' 1960's Match Used MacGregor Tommy Armour SS1 are known as 'diamond-back' irons. ' 'JACK NICKLAUS' full name is written out in the head stamp on the left side bottom plane of each of the seven irons. SS1 stands for Silver Scot, Tommy Armour's moniker. Each iron in the #2-8 set sports a copper face, said to be for a softer feel, for the 18-time major champion's strike zone that shows welcomed wear from significant round usage and practice. The grips have been replaced. Angelo Argea, known being an elite caddy to the best and his disco hall grey afro, was on the bag for Jack Nicklaus from 1963 for over 20 years. A collage of five photos of these distinguishable diamond back clubs in the final listing photo, for reference purposes only. Letters of provenance also are supplied by Jack Nicklaus himself and our consignor, the nephew of Argea's that Angelo's letter is written to. This is YOUR sole chance at display of this proven museum grade set .
