Joe Louis Signed Original Photo Souvenir Folder in Uniform with Gentlemen

Fearless inside the ring and out, Joe Louis was also the first black golfer to break the color barrier competing in a PGA Tour sanctioned event - the 1952 San Diego Open. This lot showcases an original photo with Joe Louis in his World War II United States Army uniform and his ink signature just to the left on the souvenir folder. After a charity boxing match against Buddy Baer on January 9th in war relief, Lewis enlisted as a private at Camp Upton in Long Island New York. Three other gentlemen are alongside Louis in this photo, with one Mr. Anderson signing the folder above Louis. The world-class athlete Louis dominated the field made up of his boxing cohorts starting as a 20-year old in 1934 until 1951, reigning as the world heavyweight champion from 1937 until 1949. Louis passed away in 1981 at age 66, but not before solidifying himself as one of the first African-American nationwide heroes outside the ring. The legend in not just boxing but the world of sport enjoyed the game of golf like many athletes and celebrities do, but was able to excel at it to reach new levels. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity comes with this lot. 9" x 7"
