Lee Elder Signed Undated Masters Tournament Embroidered Flag
His impact was best summed up by friend and fellow 2021 Honorary Starter Jack Nicklaus "Lee Elder was a pioneer in so many ways. Yes, he was the first black golfer to play in The Masters, but that simply underlined the hard work Lee put in to further the cause of everyone who has a dream to play on the PGATOUR and thinks there were too many barriers before them." The sadness of Lee Elder's recent passing was felt throughout the world of golf and sport alike. The trailblazing Lee Elder was invited to join Nicklaus and Gary Player as the 10th Masters Tournament Honorary Starter in 2021, one of Augusta National's great traditions during the first week of April dating back to 1963. Elder was of course the first African-American to play in the Masters Tournament in 1975, gaining the invitation after claiming victory on the PGA Tour at the 1974 Monsanto Open. Dallas, Texas' own, Elder, had four PGA Tour wins and a member of the victorious 1979 Ryder Cup United States Team. Here is an undated version of the Masters Tournament flag signed by one of the first faces you will see in Masters and golf history books for generations to come. While he was not able to hit the shot this past year with the other Honorary Starters due to his declining health, his impact across the world of sport was again deservingly brought to the forefront. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity will come with this lot.
