Legendary Sharpshooter & Raconteur 'Calamity Jane' Alex J. Morrison Photo
Martha Jane Cannary, better known as Calamity Jane, was a well-known American frontierswoman, sharpshooter, and raconteur. In addition to many exploits she was known for being an acquaintance of Wild Bill Hickok. Late in her life, she appeared in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show and at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition. This 'Alex Morrison' photo is a close shot of here in "Western" attire, with a golf club held has a gun. The verso of the photo carries the stamp "Photo by Alex Morrison - 4496 Fifth Street." The name is a familiar one, as Bobby Jones' winning putter was given that name. Bobby Jones was a 13 time Major champion, including his own personal "Bobby Slam" in which he won the Amateur and Open Championships in the US and the UK in the same calendar year. Jones received the original 'Calamity Jane' putter from Jim Maiden, the brother of his golf instructor, following a loss at the 1920 US Amateur Open. 8" x 10"
Esteemed golf instructor Alex Morrison was behind many impressive game's, likely none more than that of Henry Picard's. The lineage to the Golden Bear is simple and complex, as Picard then taught Jack Grout, who taught Jack Nicklaus. Morrison was behind all of it, and much more as his teachings were in numerous books and newspapers for the masses. His reach in the golf industry went further, as Morrison became an acclaimed photographer and writer, each of which could have been his sole profession. Here is an original Morrison photo, with the influential figure the eye behind the camera that took it.
