Lloyd Mangrum's 1946 US Open Champions Medal w. letter from family

This original US Open Gold Champions medal which was presented to Lloyd Mangrum in 1946 as tournament Champion. The front of the medal is inscribed with the words "United States Golf Association Organized 1894" and shows a detailed raised etching of the USGA's Eagle logo. The reverse of the medal contains the inscription "1946 Open Championship ", "Canterbury Golf Club Cleveland Ohio.", "Winner " .

Golf Major championship medals Rarely come to auction and this Gold 1946 US Open champion's medal is in great shape and comes with a Letter from Lloyd Mangrum's grandson for certain authenticity . With movie star good looks Mangrum ruled the tour in its first Golden Age, along with Jimmy Demaret, Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson. In 1946 at Canterbury , Lloyd shot 74-77-68-72=284 for a score of -4 which put him in a three way playoff with Vic Ghezzi and Byron Nelson. The tied in the first playoff round and played a second one and Lloyd beat Vic and Byron by one shot to win this medal and a Check for $1500. Mangrum acheived all of this even though he gave up the prime years of his career during World War II which saw him land at Normandy, serve under General Patton, fight at the Battle of the Bulge and collect two Purple Hearts

This medal comes with a detailed letter from Lloyd Mangrum's grandson certifying that this is the medal given to his grandfather in 1946 by the USGA as tournament Champion . This is iron clad authenticity coming directly from a heir and grandson of Lloyd Mangrum.
