Johnny Goodman Vintage Signed Cut
The Johnny Goodman story is a very interesting one that only the most ardent of golf fans know any more about other then he was the last amateur player to win the United States Open (1933). One of the few who in his youth was, "kid from the wrong side of the tracks" that went on to make a name for himself as a top amateur player. He piled up three prestigious wins at the Trans-Mississippi early on, but Johnny was not on the golfing map until he beat Bobby Jones in the first round of the 1929 Amateur at Pebble Beach. Then his crowning achievement came with his U.S. Open triumph. A 66 in the second round gave him the lead which Walter Hagen and Ralph Guldahl could not catch. He added the U.S. Amateur title to his resume in 1937. At the time he was only the fifth player with those double titles in their career (Travers, Ouimet, Evans and Jones). The fountain pen cut signature of Goodman in this lot measures 1 1/2" x 4", and is accompanied by a 5" x 8 1/4" magazine page photo of Goodman. The signature of Goodman due to his almost career long status as an amateur, and early passing in 1970 make him a challenging signature for those collectors assembling a run of U.S. Open Champions autographs. James Spence Authentication (JSA) provides authenticity for the signature in this lot.
