Tony Manero Signed Pencil Cut

Tony Manero barely made it into the 1936 United States Open Championship. He had to enter a playoff among qualifiers to get in. But Manero won the U.S. Open with (at the time a record low score) of 282. Harry Cooper appeared to have the Championship won with a score of 284, two strokes under the record set in 1916 by Chick Evans. Yet Manero's 67 on the final round overtook Cooper by two strokes. (Manero's low mark held for another 12 years until Hogan eclipsed it in 1948). Manero who also appeared for the U.S in the 1937 Ryder Cup has signed in pencil a cut signature which measures 4" x 2 1/4" and is accompanied by an 8" x 10" black and white reproduced swinging photo of Manero. James Spence Authentication (JSA) provides authenticity of the Manero autograph in this lot.
