1931 US Open Championship at Inverness Contestant Badge - Billy Burke Winner

Depression era contestants badge from the 1931 U.S. Open. This badge from an unknown player displays in brilliant condition with just a small amount of wear around the scalloped edge of the badge. The green/gold enamel which encircles, the prominent USGA lettering, remains vibrant over the years, and can still be clearly read as "National Open July 2 To 4, 1931". The badge was manufactured by the Whitehead & Hoag Co. Newark, NJ and this is clearly stamped on the reverse of the badge which still carries the original issued clasp. In 1931, Billy Burke survived two 36-hole playoffs to claim the hard fought National Championship by one stroke. With only a field of 144 contestants, how many of these have survived to this day? With original surface intact, the badge exhibits excellent display quality.

Please note: This auction will end at 5:00pm EST on Sunday, June 17th, with EXTENDED BIDDING to follow. All items in the auction will remain open until no items have received a bid within a 15 minute time period.
